Advantages of the Rotary Model G vs. Globe Valve Technology

Advantages of the Rotary Model G vs. Globe Valve Technology

The Model G 3-way rotary valve is a highly compact, robust and flexible solution commonly used for temperature, pressure and flow control across engine, turbine, compressor and general industrial applications.

For many industrial applications, our Model G 3-way rotary valve can bring significant advantages when compared to a globe valve. These advantages often lead to a more efficient, highly optimized engine performance.

Low Pressure Drop

The flow paths through the Model G 3-way rotary valve are controlled by an internal rotor which can turn fully out of the flow path offering an extremely low pressure drop for a given flow rate.

Compact Design

The high flow rate capability provides a very compact package which may be one or even two valve sizes down from a comparable globe valve. The rotary versus linear actuation allows for a close coupled actuator to further reduce footprint. A smaller valve coupled with a reduced pipe size presents a cost saving opportunity.

Vibration Resistance

An increasing number of applications, particularly associated with engines, require a high degree of vibration resistance. The compact design and close coupled actuator provide clear benefits by keeping the centre of mass closer to the mounting flanges. This significantly reduces the vibration amplification at the actuator. High vibration levels may still be present, so the product range also includes highly specified actuators that are suitable for on-engine applications.

Flexible Orientation

The Model G 3-way rotary valve can be mounted in any orientation* to give complete flexibility when configuring your application piping.

Flexible Port Configuration
A typical 3-way temperature control application will operate in one of two modes, Mixing or Diverting. In a Mixing application, the fluid flows in from the cold port and the hot port combining to flow out through the common port. In a Diverting application the flow is in through the common port and out through the cold port and the hot port, in the controlled proportion.

The Model G 3-way rotary valve can be fully configured to set each port as any one of the three hot, cold, and common functions. This feature can offer a significant advantage when designing pipework, especially where space is tight. So, design your pipework first and then simply configure the valve to fit!

The common port is defined by a combination of rotor type and position as shown below (Note: the rotors are shown in the mid-travel position).

The hot and cold ports are then easily defined by simply configuring the actuator to move clockwise or anti-clockwise for a given control signal.

The reality is that sometimes the operation mode of a valve needs to be changed after it has been delivered; the simple construction and set-up of the valve makes it possible to reconfigure in the field. The actuator can be reconfigured to change the mode of operation* from forward acting to reverse acting, for example, Mode 12 to mode 21. The rotor start position can also be changed mechanically to modify the common port, for example Mode 12 to Mode 23.

Note: There are 2 rotor designs to achieve all modes of operation; modes 13 and 31 require a 180 Deg segment rotor whereas all other modes require a 90 degree segment rotor. It is therefore not possible to reconfigure to a mode of operation that would require a rotor change.
