In January of 2014, Transport Canada, with assistance from the Canadian Standards Association Group (CSA Group), made significant updates to their regulations regarding the Selection and use of highway tanks, TC portable tanks and ton containers for the transportation of dangerous goods.
Fully going into effect in January of 2018, these regulations helped set a standard for safety during the transportation of dangerous goods and hazardous materials that should be recognized and implemented around the world.
Check out our video below to learn more about these updated regulations and how AMOT can help you comply with them.
You can also view a copy of these standards for free on Transport Canada’s website.
Important updates to note are those that were made to both B622-14 and B621-14, which address diesel engine safety during the transportation of flammable gasses and flammable liquids. They state that “Diesel engines on highway tanks and portable tanks containing dangerous goods of class 2.1 or class 3 and being used during loading or off-loading shall be equipped with an automatic engine air intake shut-off device that will prevent engine runaway in case of exposure to flammable vapors.”
Both Transport Canada and The CSA Group recognize the danger of diesel engine runaway and the need for an air intake shut off system during the transportation of hazardous materials. Since the implementation of these updates, AMOT has been meeting with end-users, tanker manufacturers, and Transport Canada inspectors to help answer questions about system selection, installation, and proper functional testing.
